Ahaziah of Israel

Eighth king of Israel, son of Ahab and Jezebel. Fell through a lattice in his upper chamber, sent to inquire of Baal-zebub of Ekron, and died as Elijah foretold.

Ahaziah, son of Ahab and Jezebel, succeeded his father on the throne of Israel and reigned only about two years. 1 Kings 22:52-53 says he 'walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat … and served Baal and worshiped him.' Soon after his accession Moab rebelled against Israel's tribute (2 Kings 1:1; 3:4-5). Ahaziah also sent a fleet of trading ships with Jehoshaphat from Ezion-geber, but the ships were wrecked at port — a judgement, says 2 Chronicles 20:35-37, on Jehoshaphat for the alliance. Then Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper chamber in Samaria and was badly injured. Instead of inquiring of the LORD he sent messengers to consult Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether he would recover. Elijah intercepted them with the LORD's word: 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub … therefore you shall surely die' (2 Kings 1:3-4). Twice Ahaziah sent companies of fifty to seize Elijah, and twice fire from heaven consumed them; the third captain pleaded for his life, and Elijah went down and repeated the death-sentence personally. Ahaziah died without a son and was succeeded by his brother Joram.
