The pyramids of Giza — already 1,500 years old when Joseph arrived
Egypt
Ancient kingdom of the Nile. Refuge of Abraham and Joseph, then a house of slavery, then the place from which Moses led Israel out.
Egypt is the long, narrow kingdom along the Nile, sustained by the annual flooding that made its agriculture the envy of the ancient world. It appears throughout Israel's story: Abraham went down during a famine, Joseph rose from slavery to second-in-command, the Hebrew people were enslaved there for centuries, and Moses led them out in the Exodus. Centuries later, Joseph and Mary fled there with the infant Jesus to escape Herod, returning only after Herod's death.
