Shrine of the Annunciation, Nazareth, 1839 — lithograph after David Roberts
Nazareth
Hill town in Lower Galilee, about 25 km west of the Sea of Galilee. The boyhood home of Jesus.
Nazareth, a small hill town in Lower Galilee not mentioned in the Old Testament or by Josephus, lies in a basin about 25 km west of the Sea of Galilee. It is the boyhood home of Jesus, where Joseph practised carpentry and where Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel. In the synagogue here Jesus first declared the messianic text of Isaiah 61, and was nearly thrown off a nearby cliff for it (Luke 4:16-30).
