Abraham

/ˈeɪbrəhæm/

Father of the Hebrew people. Called from Ur to Canaan and given the covenant promise. Lived around 2000 BC.

Abraham (originally Abram), son of Terah, was born in Ur of the Chaldees around the early second millennium BC. God called him to leave his homeland for a land he would be shown (Genesis 12), promising him offspring, land, and blessing for all nations. The covenant was sealed in Genesis 15 and renewed in Genesis 17, where his name was changed and circumcision instituted. Abraham fathered Ishmael through Hagar and Isaac through Sarah; his willingness to offer Isaac on Mount Moriah is the great test of faith in Genesis 22. The New Testament names him the father of all who believe (Romans 4).
