Boaz
A wealthy and respected man of Bethlehem who showed kindness to the Moabite widow Ruth gleaning in his fields, acted as her kinsman-redeemer, and married her. Their son Obed was grandfather of David.
Boaz was a man of standing in Bethlehem, a relative of Naomi's late husband Elimelech. When Ruth came to glean in his fields after the barley harvest, Boaz noticed her and gave instructions to his workers to leave extra grain and protect her. He praised her for her loyalty to Naomi and her trust in the God of Israel: "The LORD repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."
When Naomi directed Ruth to approach Boaz at the threshing floor and appeal to his role as a kinsman-redeemer, Boaz honored the request. He moved to secure the right the next morning at the city gate, where another relative who had closer claim gave up his option rather than encumber his own inheritance. Boaz formally acquired Elimelech's property and took Ruth as his wife. Their son Obed became the father of Jesse and grandfather of David. Matthew 1:5 lists Boaz in the Messianic genealogy, the son of Salmon and Rahab — himself the product of a foreigner's faithfulness, now giving the same grace to another.
