Enosh

/ˈiːnɒʃ/

Son of Seth, grandson of Adam. In his day “men began to call upon the name of the LORD” (Gen.4.26). Fourth in the antediluvian line, he lived 905 years (Gen.5.11).

Enosh (Heb. ’Enosh, “man, mortal”) is the son of Seth and grandson of Adam, fourth name in the genealogy of Genesis 5. His birth is paired with one of the most evocative notes in the early chapters of Genesis: “then began men to call upon the name of the LORD” (Gen.4.26). Many evangelical commentators read this as the formal beginning of corporate worship through the Sethite line, in deliberate contrast to the technological and violent expansion of Cain’s descendants. Enosh fathered Kenan at 90 and lived a total of 905 years (Gen.5.9–11), placing him several generations before Enoch and Methuselah. His name reappears in the chronicler’s register (1Ch.1.1) and in Luke’s genealogy of Jesus (Luk.3.38), confirming his place in the continuous human line from Adam to Christ.
