Japheth
Son of Noah, blessed by his father with enlargement and the promise of dwelling in the tents of Shem. His descendants in Genesis 10 are linked to Anatolia, Greece, and the regions north and west of Israel.
Japheth is one of Noah's three sons, listed consistently alongside Shem and Ham. In Genesis 9:27, Noah blessed him: "May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem." He and Shem together covered their father's nakedness by walking backward with a garment so as not to see him — an act of honor that contrasted with Ham's response.
The Table of Nations in Genesis 10 traces Japheth's line through seven sons: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. Ancient geography associates these names with regions across Anatolia, the Aegean, Persia, and territories further north and west — the peoples who would become the Indo-European world. Japheth's line receives the least narrative attention of the three sons in the Hebrew scriptures, but his genealogy is foundational for understanding the biblical account of how humanity spread and diversified after the flood.
