Rahab
An innkeeper in Jericho who hid Joshua's two spies under stalks of flax and confessed, "The LORD your God is God in heaven above and earth beneath." Her household was spared; she married into Israel and is named in Jesus' genealogy.
Rahab was an innkeeper in Jericho when Joshua's two spies arrived. She hid them under stalks of flax on her roof and misdirected the king's soldiers who came searching. Her explanation to the spies was a remarkable confession of faith: she had heard of the parting of the Red Sea and the defeat of the Amorite kings, and declared, "The LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath." She asked that her household be spared when Israel took the city, and the spies swore an oath on the condition she hang a scarlet cord in her window.
When Jericho fell, Joshua honored the oath. Rahab and her entire family were brought out and settled among the Israelites. Matthew 1:5 names her in Jesus' genealogy as the mother of Boaz and wife of Salmon — a Canaanite woman who became part of the covenant people through faith and action. Both Hebrews 11 and James 2 cite her as an example of faith demonstrated by works, placing her alongside the patriarchs in the Hall of Faith.
