David
Shepherd of Bethlehem, killer of Goliath, second king of Israel, writer of psalms. Lived around 1000 BC.
David, youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem, was anointed king while still a shepherd boy by the prophet Samuel. He killed the Philistine giant Goliath, became Saul's armour-bearer and musician, and after years of fleeing Saul's jealousy was crowned king first of Judah, then of all Israel. He captured Jerusalem and made it his capital, brought the Ark there, and was promised by God an everlasting dynasty (2 Samuel 7) — a promise fulfilled in Jesus, son of David. Many of the psalms are attributed to him.
