Jehu (or his envoy) bowing before Shalmaneser III, Black Obelisk, c. 825 BC — the only contemporary image of an Israelite king
Jehu
Tenth king of Israel. Anointed by Elisha's emissary to destroy the house of Ahab. Killed Joram, Jezebel, and the Baal priests; founded a four-generation dynasty.
Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat son of Nimshi, was a commander in Joram's army at Ramoth-gilead when one of Elisha's sons of the prophets came secretly into camp, poured a flask of oil over his head, and proclaimed him king with the commission to strike down the house of Ahab (2 Kings 9:6-10). Jehu's fellow officers blew the trumpet and proclaimed him king. He drove furiously to Jezreel; killed Joram of Israel with an arrow through the heart; killed Ahaziah of Judah, who was visiting; ordered Jezebel thrown from her window so that her blood was sprinkled on the wall and dogs ate her flesh (2 Kings 9:33-37); had Ahab's seventy sons in Samaria beheaded; and assembled all the worshipers of Baal under the pretext of a great sacrifice, then had them slaughtered and the temple of Baal demolished (2 Kings 10). For this purging zeal the LORD promised him sons to the fourth generation on Israel's throne (2 Kings 10:30) — fulfilled in Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, and Zechariah. Yet Jehu 'was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD … with all his heart' (2 Kings 10:31): he retained the calves of Jeroboam at Bethel and Dan. Under his reign Israel lost the Transjordan territories to Hazael of Aram. The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III (c. 825 BC) depicts a figure labelled 'Iaua son of Omri' bringing tribute to Assyria — the only known contemporary image of an Israelite king.
