Moses, by Michelangelo, c. 1515
Moses
Hebrew prophet who led Israel out of Egypt and received the Law on Mount Sinai. Lived around 1300 BC.
Moses, son of Amram and Jochebed of the tribe of Levi, was born in Egypt during Hebrew enslavement. Rescued from infanticide by Pharaoh's daughter, he was raised in the Egyptian court but fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian taskmaster. At the burning bush God commissioned him to lead Israel out of Egypt; through the ten plagues and the parting of the Red Sea, Moses led the Exodus. On Mount Sinai he received the Ten Commandments and the wider Torah, and he led the people through 40 years of wilderness wandering, dying within sight of the Promised Land on Mount Nebo.
